The expansion project of the Spitalul Clinic Județean de Urgență in Târgu Mureș represents a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening the Romanian healthcare network, with the goal of creating a center of excellence dedicated to the treatment of severe burns and building for critical services. Located in the heart of Transylvania, the hospital is part of a nationally significant healthcare context, in close proximity to the University of Medicine and numerous clinical facilities.

Promoted by the Romanian Ministry of Health and co-financed by the World Bank, the project involves the construction of a new Burn Center integrated with the existing hospital, with the aim of improving the efficiency of clinical flows and ensuring the unified operation of the entire hospital complex. The intervention is part of a broader national program launched in 2014 to modernize healthcare infrastructure, focused on enhancing the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare services.

The new facility extends over approximately 24,500 sqm and includes a wide range of functions: a dedicated ward for burn patients, a surgical block with 25 operating rooms, and an intensive care unit with over 50 beds. The project also includes transfusion and sterilization units, technical areas, and an expanded helipad—key elements to ensure rapid response and effective emergency management.

A key feature of the project is the two-level elevated walkway, designed to connect the new building with the existing hospital and ensure operational continuity between different healthcare functions. This system optimizes the movement of patients, staff, and materials, improving logistical and clinical efficiency as well as the capacity for simultaneous treatment.

The project has been developed by the design team, covering all phases up to the detailed design stage and currently providing technical assistance during construction to ensure consistency between design and execution.

The adoption of BIM methodology has enabled a high level of interdisciplinary coordination, optimizing timeframes, costs, and clash detection.

Currently under construction, with completion expected in 2026, the project represents a significant step toward a “smart hospital” model, where functional integration, technological innovation, and patient-centered design come together to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery.
