The Japanese Park in Shymkent

1. Project Overview & Current Status

• Location: Shymkent, Kazakhstan

• Total Area: 2.3 Hectares

• Project Type: Comprehensive Reconstruction & Urban Regeneration

• Status: Currently under construction.

• Completion Date: Scheduled for June 2026.

• Scope: Master planning, hydrological engineering, and facade restyling of perimeter commercial buildings.

2. Vision & Urban Integration

This project is a transformative reconstruction of a 2.3-hectare urban site in Shymkent. The vision is to create a cultural landmark that seamlessly blends traditional Japanese landscape philosophy with the city’s modern requirements. A defining feature is the stylistic integration of surrounding commercial facades. By redesigning these boundaries to match the park’s aesthetic, we have created a 360-degree immersive environment that functions as a cohesive “architectural frame” for the public space.

3. Spatial Narrative: The Red Thread

The park’s layout guides visitors through a carefully curated sequence of emotional zones:

• The Active Realm (Ceremonial Hub): Centered on the Event Plaza and Landscape Lake. Architectural anchors like the Pagoda, Red Bridge, and Pebble Beach are designed for high-density public engagement. The ceremonial crimson palette connects the park’s interior with the renovated commercial facades.

• The Contemplative Realm (Zen Core): A quiet sanctuary featuring a Tea House, Bamboo Forest, and Meditation Grove. Ritual elements, such as the Tsukubai (purification basin) and “Red Thread” Torii Road, provide an intimate, human-scale experience focused on tranquility.

4. Technical Execution & Sustainability

• Adaptive Reuse & Facade Restyling: The project breathes new life into the existing urban fabric. By restyling commercial buildings rather than demolishing them, the project adheres to sustainable urban development principles.

• Climate-Responsive Water Management: A sophisticated hydrological network of natural streams and cascading waterfalls (the “Path of Water”) runs through the site. This system honors Buddhist garden principles while creating a vital cooling microclimate for Shymkent’s arid environment.

• Educational Landscapes: The inclusion of Rice and Tea Plantations introduces an agro-landscaping element, offering educational value and a unique visual texture to the 2.3-hectare area.

5. Impact & Viability

With an expected opening in June 2026, the park is engineered to accommodate up to 2,500 visitors during peak holidays. It serves as a dual-purpose destination: a vibrant commercial and event hub and a serene ecological retreat, setting a new standard for urban park reconstruction in Central Asia.
