Adaptive waste infrastructure for fast changing public spaces

Cities evolve faster than the infrastructure that serves them. Public spaces are constantly reprogrammed: mobility patterns shift, events emerge, pedestrian zones expand, and seasonal use intensifies. Street furniture systems must respond to this fluidity with solutions that are stable, flexible and easy to deploy.

The ECO BIN was developed as a robust yet adaptable waste bin system for parks, schools, institutions, event venues and temporary urban setups.

Urban concept

Instead of relying on permanent, ground fixed installations, the ECO BIN supports a more agile urban logic. It can be placed instantly on any paved surface, relocated as spatial needs change, or removed without leaving a trace. When required, the unit can also be securely fixed to the ground, ensuring additional safety in high-risk or long-term installations.

This dual approach — mobility and optional fixation — allows the system to respond to tactical urban interventions, seasonal tourism, festivals or pilot projects, while remaining suitable for permanent public use.

Design strategy

The core element is a high performance concrete (HPC) base. Its mass and geometry provide exceptional stability without foundations, reducing installation time, cost and environmental impact.

A corrosion-resistant steel frame integrates the base with a heavy duty PVC tarpaulin bag. The bag is fully replaceable (B fire rating, optional A2), enabling fast maintenance and minimizing lifecycle costs. Instead of replacing the entire unit, individual components can be exchanged quickly and efficiently.

With a 60 litre capacity, the ECO BIN is dimensioned for high traffic public use while maintaining a compact footprint. An optional lid and customizable graphics allow adaptation to different urban contexts, from neutral institutional environments to branded event spaces.

Product performance

• 60 L capacity

• Solid concrete base, no groundwork required

• Stable, movable and optionally fixable

• Open or PVC bag version

• HPC concrete, steel frame, heavy duty PVC

• Quick part replacement, low maintenance cost

As part of the POP-UP collection, the ECO BIN combines durability with flexibility — delivering a cost-efficient waste solution designed for the contemporary adaptive city.

VPI Kft.

For over 14 years, VPI has been shaping public spaces and interiors with design-led concrete solutions, combining award-winning design with reliable, high-quality manufacturing.

By combining architecture, design and technology, we deliver solutions that are both meaningful and highly functional. Our portfolio spans from street furniture that defines public spaces to custom interior elements.

At VPI, we believe design has a role in strengthening communities. We support social and cultural projects that make public spaces more inclusive, engaging and durable.

We continuously explore the possibilities of concrete as contemporary design material. Through collaboration with universities, architects and designers, we engage in education, experimentation and applied research, developing new techniques and applications. Our aim is to expand the potential of concrete beyond conventional limits and to create solutions that meet the evolving needs of both interiors and public spaces.
