Project Brief – Bourmac Avenue

Located in a suburban street in Sydney, Bourmac Avenue presents a contemporary approach to residential living through the integration of architecture, interior, and landscape design. Submitted under Urban and Residential Design and Residential Living and Dining Spaces, the project explores how spatial clarity and material restraint can enhance everyday life.

Urban and Architectural Response

The project reinterprets the suburban dwelling with a clear architectural language of clean geometry and layered volumes. The façade balances solid and void, providing privacy while maintaining openness to the streetscape.

Massing and planning are carefully arranged to maximise natural light, cross-ventilation, and spatial continuity. Large openings and transitional thresholds connect indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless relationship between architecture and landscape.

Living and Dining Experience

The core of the home is an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area designed as a flexible social hub. The space supports both daily living and gatherings, with a fluid layout that enhances interaction and comfort.

Generous glazing and double-height elements bring in natural light, creating a calm and expansive atmosphere. Sliding doors extend the interior towards outdoor areas, allowing the living and dining spaces to expand beyond their physical boundaries.

Interior Design Approach

The interior adopts a minimalist yet warm aesthetic, defined by a neutral palette and natural materials such as timber and stone. The design emphasises proportion, texture, and detail rather than ornamentation.

Lighting is used to enhance spatial depth and highlight material qualities, combining daylight with subtle artificial illumination to create a balanced and refined environment.

Design Outcome

Bourmac Avenue demonstrates how a suburban home can be transformed into a light-filled, connected, and highly liveable space. By integrating architecture and interior design, the project offers a contemporary residential model that is both functional and emotionally engaging.
