In the 21st century, China’s urban lifestyle rapidly shifted toward individualism, with high-rise residential towers increasingly replacing other housing forms to become the dominant urban fabric in megacities like Shanghai and Guangzhou, a trend that gradually extended to second- and third-tier cities. After over 30 years of rapid development, some high-rise residential apartments have now entered a phase of secondary renovations. This project is a renovation and refurbishment effort set against this evolving backdrop.
Through this renovation, we aim not only to upgrade the physical infrastructure but also to create a pure spatial atmosphere grounded in minimalist living philosophy, catering to the owner’s simplified midlife lifestyle. At the same time, utilizing the existing structure, we introduced a small tree pit on the second floor and, paired with a rooftop green belt, crafted two distinctive sky gardens. These additions bring a natural ecosystem into the home, enabling the owner to enjoy a unique green space within a high-rise setting. Additionally, the project enhances indoor natural lighting and ventilation through targeted renovations of the terrace-side façade and window systems, delivering visual expansion, continuity, and panoramic views for both public and private spaces, while fostering a relaxed, nature-inspired sense of comfort.
To this end, we have harnessed the subtle yet harmonious interplay between high-rise environments and nature, thoroughly exploring the transformative potential of urban residential towers. On one hand, the design embraces a minimalist aesthetic; on the other, it weaves in green and natural elements. Ultimately, the project optimizes both functionality and spatial quality, cultivating a minimalist ambiance and providing residents with a distinctive, nature-infused living environment.
