Dividing between two suburbs, Drimnagh & Inchicore, of Dublin Ireland is the The Grand Canal. Drimnagh is an area that continues to be neglected with many derelict buildings and undeveloped areas which has led to many of the long-term residents either leaving the area or feeling unsafe. We intend to utilize amenities such as the canal that have been underutilized to date. We want Drimnagh to become the suburban community that we know it can be and we feel that we have created a plan that addresses road safety, promotes pedestrian and cycling uses with public realm improvements and develops the area for the community to gather in a safe space and
will in turn regenerate the area bringing together young and old and inclusive for all.

A Feasibility Study has now been completed. The project aims to provide better and more accessible connectivity via improved bridges crossing the canal. Better use of Public Realm and Spaces to include more openness and greenery, including trees, to counterbalance the encroaching urban developments and bring about a sense of Village Community.

We aim to create a Village Centre and we feel our project fulfils the need to create viable, vibrant, and safe spaces for people to live, work and visit, while also functioning as the service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community. We thank you for taking the time to review our summary of the proposal. An award such as Design Skills will invigorate and give momentum to the project to further progress. Thank you!

Geoffrey Whelan Architects - GWA

As a third-generation resident of Drimnagh and having established GWA Architects in 2018 working from a home office in the area, Geoffrey Whelan, Principal Architect at GWA Architects was commissioned by Dynamic Drimnagh Community Group to prepare a Feasibility Study for a Canal Village along Davitt Road, Drimnagh. Drimnagh has been a long-forgotten Dublin suburb and, unlike many other Dublin suburbs, throughout its history, a Village Centre never developed. Dynamic Drimnagh Community Group came together from a group of likeminded residents with the aim of developing the area, to give it that feeling of togetherness and a sense of being a part of a cohesive village community.
