Wind Walker is a speculative mobile library born from a simple question: What if architecture could go where people need it?
Libraries are traditionally fixed places, concentrating knowledge in permanent buildings while many remote communities remain geographically disconnected from educational and cultural resources. Wind Walker challenges this condition by imagining a library that does not wait for people to travel toward knowledge, but instead travels toward them—moving between dispersed communities along the Red Sea and the African shores of the sea.
Inspired by the articulated movement of Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest, Wind Walker combines architecture, mechanical movement, and natural forces into a single inhabitable organism. A lightweight timber structure rests on articulated wooden legs, while a flexible fabric enclosure can retract during movement. Large deployable sails capture the wind and contribute to the walking mechanism, transforming an environmental force into propulsion. Importantly, the movement remains human-led: people guide and operate the Strandbeest-inspired system, maintaining a direct relationship between human intention, machine, and landscape.
The library is not designed to carry a heavy collection of physical books. Instead, it becomes a moving exchange of knowledge. Each community can bring its own books and stories to the library, where they can be digitized and transformed into audiobooks and other accessible digital content. These resources then become part of a shared collection that can travel to other communities, allowing knowledge to circulate rather than remain geographically fixed.
Satellite internet extends this network beyond the physical journey. Each Wind Walker provides a satellite communication desk, introducing remote communities to reliable connectivity and teaching them how to access, communicate through, and benefit from satellite-based digital services. The library therefore becomes not only a place for reading, but also a temporary school, digital gateway, communication hub and cultural exchange.
The concept evolved through a process of human–AI dialogue. AI was used as a design-thinking tool to explore the relationship between structural mass, wind force, sail area and movement. This investigation helped transform an initially improbable 300 m² mobile library into a lighter and more adaptable architectural system. Architectural interpretation, spatial design, material decisions and final design direction remained human-led.
Wind Walker ultimately proposes a new kind of cultural infrastructure: a library without a fixed address, moving across the Red Sea region, carrying not books but the ability to create, share, access, and circulate knowledge.
What if knowledge could move? What if architecture could follow it?

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PROJECTMASAR Architects
MASAR Architects is an Egypt-based architectural studio driven by ideas, experimentation, and a belief that architecture can create meaningful cultural impact. Through an expanding portfolio of award-winning and internationally recognized competition projects, MASAR explores architecture beyond conventional boundaries—transforming cultural narratives, environmental challenges, and human experiences into distinctive spatial concepts.
Alongside its design practice, MASAR extends its role through MASAR101, an educational and cultural initiative offering talks, workshops, university collaborations, and design competitions that connect emerging architects and designers with knowledge, dialogue, and opportunity.
From concept to competition, from practice to education, MASAR seeks to create architecture that is not only designed, but imagined, questioned, and shared.
