The brief called for the complete renovation and extension of an existing family home on the outskirts of the city. While the property occupied an excellent site, the original house failed to capitalise on its greatest asset—the rear garden and its solar orientation. Internally, the layout was fragmented and inefficient, with poor circulation, limited natural light, and spaces that no longer supported contemporary family living.

Our design reimagined the house from the inside out, transforming it into a light-filled, highly functional family home that is deeply connected to its landscape. The rear of the house was opened up with extensive glazing, creating a seamless relationship between the interior living spaces and the garden while maximising daylight throughout the home.

A central objective was to create moments of delight within the everyday experience of the house. Carefully considered architectural features, including a bespoke window seat overlooking the garden, provide places to pause, relax and connect with the surrounding landscape. The entrance sequence was completely redefined through the introduction of a striking pivot front door, a sculptural floating staircase with frameless glass balustrades, a dramatic rooflight above the stairwell, and glazed internal doors that allow natural light to penetrate deep into the heart of the home.

Beyond aesthetics, the design delivers a highly practical home tailored to modern family life. A dedicated laundry room, generous walk-in storage, and a ground-floor guest suite with ensuite accommodation ensure the house functions effortlessly on a day-to-day basis while providing flexibility for future needs.

Externally, the transformation is equally significant. The previously anonymous dwelling has been reinterpreted with a confident architectural language that combines strong contemporary forms with carefully selected materials. The restrained exterior contrasts beautifully with the bright, warm and welcoming interiors, creating a home of both character and calm.

For us, the success of every project is measured not only by the quality of the architecture but by the lives it enriches. Following completion, we returned to meet with our clients and experience the home through their eyes. Their overwhelming satisfaction and genuine delight in the spaces we helped create stand as the greatest endorsement of the project and its success.
