What Started as a Simple Renovation Turned Into a Full Rebuild of This Home
Outside, the pool and deck area extends the home’s living space outdoors. A wide, flat roof provides shade over both lounging and dining areas, making the space comfortable throughout the day. Warm wood ceilings and decking soften the modern structure, while a charcoal feature wall with a mounted television adds a cozy focal point for evenings. Woven chaise loungers sit close to the pool, and a built-in grill with a long dining table makes hosting feel effortless.

At first glance, the Austin bungalow appeared ready for a thoughtful update. Set among mature live oaks in a long established neighborhood, the home carried nearly a century of character. Once work began, it became clear that saving it would require far more than cosmetic changes. The project evolved into a careful rebuilding effort shaped by preservation, collaboration, and a desire to keep the spirit of the original home intact for a growing family.

Architecture firm Side Angle Side worked closely with homeowner and interior designer Holly Beth Potter to guide the transformation of the circa 1935 Victorian bungalow. As construction progressed, widespread rot and compromised structural elements were uncovered, making a traditional restoration impossible.

A new addition designed to sit in contrast with the restored historic structure. Rather than mimic the original bungalow, the addition creates an architectural juxtaposition that looks forward while still respecting the home’s past.

The architects relied on archival photos and existing drawings to fully reconstruct the original house. Salvaged trim, crown molding, baseboards, longleaf pine floors, and interior doors were restored and reused. New exterior siding and windows were installed with detailing that reflects the original design, resulting in a 3,700 square foot home that balances historic character with contemporary living.

A low dresser keeps storage discreet, while petite white sconces provide gentle, even light. Oversized abstract artwork introduces muted color, balanced by greenery and sculptural accents that make the space feel composed without feeling precious.

The dining room is described as the heart of the home, with original wood pocket doors creating a striking entry into the room. Original shiplap walls were preserved and painted a soft neutral yellow, while an oval Nickey Kehoe community table anchors the space, designed for large gatherings. Vintage Guillerme et Chambron dining chairs and matching armchairs surround the table, all reupholstered in a cream fabric with rust red trim. An oversized Noguchi pendant casts a warm glow above.

This Austin home stands as a reminder that historic preservation is rarely straightforward. By rebuilding with care and reusing what could be saved, the project preserves the spirit of the original bungalow while creating a functional home for a family of five.
